The role of gas storage for securing gas supplies ahead of the winter season
This vote is about filling gas storage before winter.
Background
Since the 2022 energy crisis, member states have had to fill their gas storage to 90% before winter. This rule could push prices up, as everyone bought at the same time. The text, negotiated with governments, extends it while making it more flexible.
- Keeps the 90% target, but it can be reached at any time between 1 October and 1 December.
- Allows a deviation of a few points in difficult market conditions.
- Extends these rules by two years.
Adopted: 425 for, 106 against, 43 abstentions, 145 did not vote.
