Background
In 2024 the EU signed a strategic partnership with Egypt, whose economy was in deep trouble. This text concerns the main financial support planned, in the form of loans. Supporters point to regional stability and migration cooperation; opponents to the human rights situation in Egypt.
- Grants Egypt up to €4 billion in loans, on top of a first billion paid in 2024.
- Payments are tied to economic reforms and to conditions, including effective democratic mechanisms.
Adopted: 386 for, 132 against, 49 abstentions, 152 did not vote.
