Certain corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence requirements
This vote is about easing companies’ obligations on sustainability reporting and due diligence.
Background
The first of the Commission’s simplification “omnibus” packages. It revises two recent laws: one requires companies to publish information on their social and environmental impact (CSRD), the other to identify and prevent human rights and environmental harm in their supply chains (due diligence, CSDDD). Supporters talk of competitiveness; opponents of a major step back.
- Sustainability reporting now only applies to companies with more than 1,000 employees and €450 million in turnover.
- Due diligence now only applies to companies with more than 5,000 employees and €1.5 billion in turnover, and its application is postponed.
- The number of companies covered falls very sharply compared with the original laws.
