Harmonised requirements in the internal market on transparency of third countries interest representation
This vote is about a register of lobbyists working for non-EU countries.
Background
After several cases of foreign interference, including “Qatargate”, the Commission proposed making lobbying carried out in the EU on behalf of non-EU countries transparent. Opponents see it as a “foreign agents law” that could target NGOs.
- Requires organisations lobbying on behalf of a non-EU country to register in a public register.
- Sets common rules for this register across all member states.
