Bilateral safeguard clause of the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement for agricultural products
This vote is about the safeguard clause protecting European farmers in the trade agreement with Mercosur.
Background
To reassure farmers worried about the Mercosur trade deal, the EU drew up a “safeguard clause” regulation: a tool to protect sensitive farm sectors (beef, poultry, sugar…) if South American imports were to destabilise them.
- Allows tariff cuts to be suspended temporarily if imports of a product rise sharply or prices fall.
- Provides for closer monitoring of sensitive farm products and short investigation deadlines.
- Parliament sought to make the mechanism faster and easier to trigger.
