Background
“My Voice, My Choice” is a European Citizens’ Initiative: more than a million citizens signed it to ask the EU to help women who have no access to safe abortion in their country. Parliament gives its opinion here; it is the Commission that must formally respond.
- Supports the idea of an EU funding mechanism, which member states could join voluntarily, to help these women.
- Abortion law remains a national competence: the resolution does not change national laws.
- Opponents argued that the EU should not fund this area.
Rejected: 241 for, 356 against, 48 abstentions, 74 did not vote.
