Phasing out Russian natural gas imports, improving monitoring of potential energy dependencies
This vote is about phasing out Russian gas imports.
Background
Since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has sharply cut its purchases of Russian energy, but was still importing Russian gas, mostly as liquefied natural gas (LNG) by ship. This text, negotiated with governments, organises a complete stop to these imports.
- Bans new contracts to buy Russian gas.
- Phases out existing contracts: short-term contracts first in 2026, then long-term contracts by the end of 2027 at the latest.
- Requires member states to present plans to do without Russian gas and strengthens monitoring of energy dependencies.
Adopted: 500 for, 120 against, 32 abstentions, 67 did not vote.
