Establishment of a list of safe countries of origin at Union level
This vote is about an EU list of “safe countries of origin”, whose asylum applications are handled faster.
Background
Asylum applications from nationals of “safe countries of origin” are handled under an accelerated procedure, as they generally have little chance of success. Until now each country had its own list; this text creates the first list common to the whole EU.
- Puts seven countries on the EU list: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco and Tunisia.
- Candidate countries for EU membership are in principle considered safe, with exceptions (conflict, sanctions, high recognition rate).
- Each application is still examined individually, but faster.
Adopted: 408 for, 184 against, 60 abstentions, 66 did not vote.
