Screening of foreign investments in the Union
This vote is about screening foreign investments in European companies.
Background
Foreign investors can buy strategic European companies (energy, technology, defence…), which can pose security risks. Since 2019 the EU has had a framework for screening them, but not every member state had a screening mechanism.
- Requires every member state to have a mechanism to screen foreign investments.
- Sets a minimum list of sensitive sectors where screening is compulsory.
- Strengthens cooperation between member states and with the Commission.
