Air passenger rights
This vote is about air passenger rights: compensation for delayed or cancelled flights.
Background
Air passenger rights (compensation for delays, cancellations…) date back to 2004. A reform had been stuck since 2013. Governments wanted to raise the delay giving a right to compensation; Parliament defended the current three-hour threshold.
- The right to compensation still starts at a three-hour delay, with the current amounts of €250, €400 and €600 depending on distance.
- Airlines will have to inform passengers of their rights and answer claims within a set deadline.
- Airlines may not deny boarding on the return flight because the passenger missed the outbound one.
- A closed list of “extraordinary circumstances” that exempt airlines from paying compensation.
