Establishment of the digital euro
This vote is about creating a digital euro, an electronic currency issued by the European Central Bank.
Background
The digital euro would be an electronic form of the euro, issued by the European Central Bank like coins and notes but usable on a phone or card, online and offline. Supporters see a European alternative to US payment systems; opponents worry about privacy and the future of cash.
- A cap on how much each person can hold, so money does not flow massively out of banks.
- Privacy safeguards and free basic services.
- An obligation for most businesses to accept it, with exemptions for small firms.
- Protection of cash: shops will not be able to refuse it as a matter of principle.
Adopted: 416 for, 169 against, 22 abstentions, 112 did not vote.
