Alignment with the EU economic governance framework and further simplification of that framework
This vote is about adapting and simplifying the EU’s common budget rules.
Background
In 2024 the EU reformed its fiscal rules: each country now follows a multi-year net expenditure path. Several older regulations on euro-area budget surveillance and sanctions still referred to the old system. This text updates and simplifies them.
- Replaces the old concepts with those of the 2024 reform (medium-term fiscal plans, net expenditure path).
- Removes reporting obligations considered unnecessary or duplicated, as well as “economic partnership programmes”.
- Euro-area countries’ draft budgets will have to explain how they comply with the path set by the Council.
Adopted: 450 for, 135 against, 75 abstentions, 59 did not vote.
