Recommendation on EU-China political relations
This vote is about political relations between the European Union and China.
Background
This report, prepared by the Foreign Affairs Committee with Belgian MEP Hilde Vautmans (Renew) as rapporteur, sets out Parliament’s position on political relations with China. The EU sees China as a partner, a competitor and a “systemic rival” at the same time.
- Calls for trade reciprocity and a proportionate response if China does not open its market, and for less dependence on Chinese critical raw materials.
- Describes China as a decisive enabler of Russia’s war against Ukraine and asks it to use its influence to end it.
- Rejects any change to Taiwan’s status by force and the pressure to exclude it from international organisations, and calls for the release of political prisoners in China.
