Empowering France to accede to the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles
This vote is about allowing France to join an inter-American convention on the protection of sea turtles.
Background
The Inter-American Convention protects sea turtles and their habitats in the Americas. France wants to join it for its territories in the Caribbean, French Guiana and Saint Pierre and Miquelon. As the conservation of marine resources is an exclusive EU competence, a Member State needs EU authorisation to join such a treaty on its own.
- Authorises France to join the convention for its American and Caribbean territories.
- France must cooperate on protecting turtles and consult the Commission on decisions taken under the convention.
- A technical text, adopted almost unanimously (658 votes in favour).
Adopted: 658 for, 2 against, 4 abstentions, 55 did not vote.
