The need for an EU strategy to counter Islamist entryism and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood network
This vote is about countering Islamist entryism and the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood network in Europe, and the strategy the EU should adopt.
Background
The European People’s Party (EPP), backed by the conservatives (ECR), proposed a resolution on “Islamist entryism”: a strategy attributed to certain networks, notably linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, said to seek influence in associations, education and public life in Europe. The left saw a risk of stigmatising Muslims and hampering civil society.
- Calls for entities and people linked to the Muslim Brotherhood to be put on the EU terrorist list (the decision lies with governments).
- Calls for a common EU strategy against these networks and shared criteria to spot signs of infiltration, including “double messaging”.
- Asks to cut public funding to fundamentalist organisations and to scrutinise some associations more closely, while supporting Muslims who stand up for democracy.
