Objection pursuant to Rule 115(2), (3) and (4)(c): Monacolins from red yeast rice
This vote is about monacolins from red yeast rice, a food supplement sold to lower cholesterol, whose use the Commission wants to restrict.
Background
Red yeast rice is sold as a food supplement against cholesterol. Its monacolins are chemically close to a medicine, lovastatin. In 2025 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded they cannot be considered safe, even below 3 mg a day, the current limit. The Commission therefore wants to ban them in food. An objection sought to block the ban.
- The measure adds monacolins from red yeast rice to the list of substances banned in food, including food supplements.
- Products already on the market may still be sold for 12 months.
