Reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector: postponement of certain obligations
This vote is about postponing some obligations to cut methane leaks for energy companies.
Background
The 2024 EU Methane Regulation requires, among other things, importers of oil, gas and coal to monitor and report their emissions. In October 2026 the Commission proposed postponing some of these obligations by one year, citing security of supply amid high energy prices. In plenary, a motion to reject was defeated by 374 votes to 123, and Parliament then adopted its position by 341 votes to 225, backed by the EPP, ECR, Patriots and ESN; the S&D, Greens/EFA and the Left voted against. The text still has to be approved by Member States.
- Moves from 2029 to 2031 the date from which importers must show monitoring standards equivalent to the EU’s.
- Grants no extra time for oil, gas and coal from sanctioned countries.
- Asks the Commission for a report on implementation and security of supply by July 2029.
Adopted: 341 for, 225 against, 6 abstentions, 148 did not vote.
